About mustang

Mustang is from tibetan which denotes fertile plain.It is largely dry and arid due to its position in the rain shadow of the Annapurna massif towards the south.The populatin is around 9000 spread between 3 towns .The main feature of Mustang is Gandaki river ,its valley and tributaries.Mustang was once an independent kingdom,although closely tied by language and culture to tibet. At the end
of 18 century Mastang was annexed by Nepal.Even though foreigners are allowed to visit Mustang since 1991 tourism to upper Mustang is regulated.Foreigners need special permit to enter .In 2007 a shepherd found 55 cave paintings depicting the life of buddha.
